"...It is strange that only one case of sunstroke is reported. John Alsop, one of the people at the poor farm, a man of 35, was killed by the heat. He was at work in a field, and started across the field with a tub on his head. He had walked but a short distance, when he fell down and in few minutes was dead. He came from LeRoy, and had been in the county's charge some years. Pantagraph, 31 Jul 1885, p. 4 |

"Harry Benton, Old Time Printer, Dead. "30" has been written for Harry Benton, one of the last survivors of the old school of journeymen printers. The end came at 7 a.m. yesterday at St. Joseph's hospital, where he was recently removed form the county farm when it was seen that the debility of age was hastening the end. For five years he was an inmate of the latter institution, but it was not generally known that he had been taken there, his pride keeping away from the print shops....Tradtiion hs it that Benton was born of a wealthy family, was given a college education and was a reporty of unusual talent in his youth, holding positions on metropolitan papers. He was student of Shakespeare, and when in the right mood and with an audience that met with his approbation, would recite passages from the works of the immortal bard. Convial habits started Benton into the wandering life that has continued for perhaps fifty years." Pantagraph, 14 Aug 1920, p. 13 |

"Another Case of Self-Destruction. --On Saturday morning, about 7 o'clock, a young man in the employ of St. Joseph's Hospital discovered the body of John Dockham, a well-known drayman of this city, hanging from the limb of a tree in the Toliver pasture, southeast of the hospital...John dockhamd has been a resident of Bloomington for a number of years; was formerly ingaged in the manufacture of brooms, and since then has been driving a horse dray in the city. For some time he has been moody and melancholly, and showed signs of being demented, caused likely by a sunstroke received about a year ago last summer...He leaves a wife and two children in very destitute circumstances, so straightend that the coroner had to take the body in charge to have it buried at the expense of the county, which was accordingly done." NEW SUITS ---Major Fado, a well-known colored gentleman who paints in water colors with a ten inch whitewash brush, has sued Dr. Schroder fro $200 because the philosophic constructor of Wiener wurst allows the exhaust steam from his sassage (sic) foundry to run aroudn without a muzzle, and impinge on the transept of Major Fado's humble residence. The major speaks of himself as "one of Dr. Schroder's most 'steamed friends'." Pantagraph, 24 Jan 1878, p. 4. |

The deceased was 63 years old and is supposed to have come from a New York orphanage. Interment will be made tomorrow at the county farm, unless the body is claimed by relatives. COMMITS SUICIDE BY HANGING HIMSELF ---Willie Spiegel Takes own Life --Sixteen-year-old youth found dead in barn on George Hartman Farm Yesterday. -- Willie Spiegel, 16 years of age, was found hanging from a beam in the barn of the George Hartman farm, three miles southeast of Bloomington, near Woodlawn Cemetey. His body was cold in death when discovered by William Cox, his uncle, with whom he made his home. It is thought that he had been dead for several hours when the uncle arrived. No reason is given by the family for the rash deed of the young man. So far as known he had never mad complaints of his lot in life to members of the household, but since the sensational death of Mr. and Mrs. Cox recall some strange actions of the youth which were at the time not considered. HOME IN CANFIELD, MO. -Willie Spiegel lived in Canfield, Mo., with his mother until last fall. At that time he came to Illinois and started to work for his uncle who is engaged in the dairying business. He was seen the last time yesterday morning about 10:30 o'clock and was next seen in the state of death. Mrs. Cox had missed her nephew and mentioned the fact to her husband when he returned from delivering the milk. In the search which was instituted Mr. Cox went to the hay mow and there found the young man. HUNG BY A STRAP. -- A strap, a part of a line, had been tied to a beam in the haymow. From all evidence the boy had jumped from this beam after having tied the strap in a slip-knot. His neck was probably broken. It looked as if he were merely standing with his head bent forward. Upon investigation it could be seen that all the weight of the body was on the strap, altho the feet were nearly level with the floor. Coroner Hare was notified and with Deputy Sheriff Morrison hurried to the scene. The body was cut down and brought to Bloomington, where it will be held until some disposition is made by relatives. The inquest will be held this morning in the coroner's office of the court house. LITTLE KNOWN OF BOY. -- But little is know of the boy. He had been in the emply of his uncle, Mr. Cox, since last fall, coming to this vicinity from Canfield, Mo., where his mother is now living. He was about 5 feet 6 inches tall and rather stockily built. An air of mystery surrounds the affair. Mr. and Mrs. Cox were excited and nervous yesterday afternoon that is was practically impossible to learn anything regarding the boy or his life. Neighbors stated yesterday that he was industrious and from all appearances was contended (sic) with life." Pantagraph, 4 Jan 1913, p. 11 |

IS KILLED AT TOWANDA BY C. & A. LIMITED -- JOE MASKOWSKI MEETS FATE. --Trainmen say Victim of Accident Yesterday Afternoon, Walked in Front of Train--Body Badly Mangled. --A man believed to be Joe Maskowski, of Chicago, met a horrible death at Towanda yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, when he deliberately walked into the Chicago & Alton south bound Limited, known as train No. 1, which was in charge of Engineer Joseph Berner. the body of the unfortunate man, who has the appearance of being of Polish origin, was cut in two just below the arm pits and the top of his head was crushed off. According to the obtainable infromation, the victim walke from Bloomington to Towanda yesteray afternoon. He stopped at the posoffice in Towanda and after purchasing a cigar, started to walk north on the south bouch C. & A. track. When he reached a point a mile and a quarter north of the city, he met with the accident which caused his death. WALKED INTO TRAIN. --From the statement of the trainmen, the man deliberately walked into the approaching train. Whether he di so, with suicidal intent or whether he was unaware of his periloous position, is only a matter of conjecture. It is known, however, that he was in an intoxicated condition and was seen staggering up the track. BRING BODY TO BLOOMINGTON. --Coroner Hare was summoned and went to Towanda last night and brought the body back to Bloomington on train No. 79. the body was taken to Flynn's undertakig parlors, where it was prepared for burial. Coroner Hare will hold the inquest at his office in the court house this afternoon at 2 o'clock. WAS LOCKED UP IN TOWANDA --Coroner Hare learned from the Towanda city marshal that Maskowski and a companion who gave his name as Frank Schmidt, were locked in th calaboose at Towanda Tuedsay night. It is thought that the accident victim is one of the men, presumably Maskowski. Whether he gave a fictitious name is not known. He is a man between 35 and 40 years of age." "OLD MRS. SHEAHAN. --Sixteen years ago, just think of it,, the year the war began--Mrs. Sheahan, then a lady in fair circumstances in Bloomington, became deranged. Since then she has been an inmate of the poor house, day by day becoming less human and more degraded and filthy, until, except in outward form, she has lost all semblance of humanity. Her habits are so filthy and disgusting that, without witnessing them, one would not believe their narration, and seeing them could not soon quiet the qualms of his stomach. bu all is not unpleasant that is seen there. There are men and women around the building whose faces show that they are moderately contented, and are grateful that they have bed and food; old people whose declining years are brightened by the car the county bestows on them; younger ones, who are convalescing from illness, and have found rest and strength with the kindly superintendent; children, who have grown up on the farm, and know no other house...."
